Love Scripts
‘Kuch kuch hota hai; tum nahi sumjho gi’… ‘I’m just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her’… As Juliet’s call of ‘Romeo, Romeo’ fades out as our idea of the typical love story, it’s been replaced by new tales of romance that we know all too well. What does love look like? How do you know if it’s going to work out? Well just ask Simran and Raj. Or Jack and Rose. Or if you want to go even further back, Ram and Sita will happily share their story with you.
From the books we read to the songs we listen to, ‘love scripts’ are all around. These fictions form the shapes of the love we desire and aspire to, from dreams of ‘happily ever after’ to steamy romances in the rain. What all these love stories and images have in common, though, is precisely the part about the story. They’re fictional. Reality deviates from the script. It has no soundtracks, magic carpets, or fields of yellow flowers open to the public. Not to say that there isn’t love in the real world. Of course there is, but the best part is that each of us gets to direct what it looks like.
