Violence. It’s more than a slap on the face. More than a beating. More than a shove. It can take the form of emotional blackmail. Pressures for sex. Financial neglect. Verbal abuse. If any of this happens between you and your boyfriend/parent/husband, it's domestic violence. One of the things to remember is that there are people who love you, and will continue to love you, without making violence part of the equation. Find them, speak up, and lose the abuse.

Contrary to popular belief, domestic violence is not just a symptom of rural India. It affects 40% of women (ICRW 1996) and cuts across age, education level, social class and religion.

Domestic violence does not only occur between husband and wife. It can happen between parents and kids, siblings, live-in partners, older people… if it's within the home, it's domestic violence.

The Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act (PWDVA) was introduced in India in 2005. It was designed to more holistically address issues of domestic violence than previous laws.
